The relationship between biological filtration and Oxygen
Aquarium filtration relies for the most part on aerobic beneficial bacteria to break down nitrogenous waste materials. A steady supply of fresh oxygen, will deter the build up of harmful gasses and chemicals that can quickly accumulate to create a toxic environment. A sudden buildup of excess waste materials will trigger a series of events to make  the situation even worse.

Beneficial bacteria reproduce rapidly in response to sudden increase in waste materials  As they multiply, the bacteria become visible and form what look like clouds of swirling, white smoke. This bacteria uses  large amounts of oxygen and will create an oxygen-poor environment harmful to fish and other inhabitants. The use of aeration devices is the most effective way to replenish the O2 content in the aquarium.

There are many ways to increase O2 in the aquarium some of witch are air stones, bubble walls, power heads and live plants, the benefit of live plants can be read about at the Plants in the aquarium link.
